Aquila Art Glass hosted the ORBS April meeting.  Thanks to Aquila for sharing their space with us.

Karen Moyer called the meeting to order.

Logos |
Members were encourage to vote for one of the five options for an ORBS logo today. The winning logo will be used on our web site, name badges, and other items. Thanks to Kathy Perras for helping coordinate the logos for presentation.

ISGB Update
Kendra Bruno, our regional ISGB representative, provided business cards for anyone who needs her contact information. She congratulated ORBS on our new web site. She has shared the site with Fire and Rain.  Recommended registering for this year’s Gathering in Minneapolis as soon as possible. Next year it will be held in Oakland.

Kendra also indicated that discussions continuing for a regional bead meeting. The team is looking for a location that will work, and to firm up the timing. This will likely be held in the Spring. More information to come.

ORBS Web Site and Communications
Karen indicated two e-mail addresses are being bounced back. Reminder to ensure members  verify they are receiving these e-mails. Let her know if you are not, and your e-mail address information will be validated.

The ORBS Web site has a links page where members can post information, links to their sites, and photos of their work.  This is an opt-in option for members, not required. Send Karen the information you would like to include, and she’ll post them on the site.

The site will soon have a bulletin board to allow members to post information on upcoming events, classes, sales, etc..  Please provide suggestions to Karen for changes or additions to the web site.

Upcoming Meetings
Leslie Thiel will be our May guest speaker and will demonstrate her curved beads. There are no meetings in June, July and August. The next meeting is in September, Sept. 23rd.  We’d like to have a picnic. If you have suggestions for locations, please give them to Karen. We will also hold a ‘chair sale’ at the picnic, where members can display and sell a chair size amount of their work.

We will survey members later this week to get ideas for future speakers or programs at meetings. This will likely be on the web site.

ORBS Chapter at Gathering
ORBS will have a six foot table at the Gathering. The cost is $120.00, and includes electricity.  We will need volunteers to represent ORBS at the table. There is room for a selection of beads from ORBS members. Possibly offer enough space for a tray. People who work the table will get space for free.  Let Karen know if you would like to participate and have your beads represented, even if you are unable to attend the Gathering. Leslie and Karen will both have tables that may be located next to the ORBS table. We need someone to take this on and be the lead.

Sunday Art Mart
Kathy presented information on the new City Wide Arts Collective. This is a collaborative effort between the City of  Portland, Smart Park, and the Regional Arts and Culture Council. They have rented a space to do something similar to Saturday market on Sundays in the Smart Park Garage on 3rd and Alder. This pilot program runs four months in the summer and can fold at anytime if it doesn’t work. Parking spots are $15.00 each, with a $20.00 annual fee.  No restrooms or electricity, but they will offer security and advertising. Kathy will offer this information to the membership today. It requires that exhibitors create or be the artist. Parking is available on the other side of the garage.  ORBS will post a link to this on the ORBS web site new bulletin board.

More information can be found on their web site at:  www.sundayartmart.com

Arts Cabins Project at Government Camp
Betsy came to the board meeting to present information about the new Arts Cabin Project at Government Camp.  These two ex-ranger cabins include a bead making studio with four minor bench burners.  She is looking for teachers , and to welcome everyone to be involved. Teachers can stay at the cabins, where rooms and kitchen is available. Classes can be offered during the week, or weekends as available.  Studio is brand new, and can be accessed all year, the road is plowed. Betsy can put logo on ‘Our Supporters’ page for the Arts Cabin Project. Can also come up and do open torch. Teachers can show work at the museum in Government Camp. They are putting the summer schedule together now, so let Betsy know if you are interested. Contact information with web site links will be on the ORBS bulletin board.

More information can be found on their web site at: www.Artscabin.

Etsy
Leah from Aquila shared information about Etsy, a web site that is a great venue for bead artists to sell through. Listings last for four months. This is a fairly new site, only about two years old and gets good traffic.  Posters can cross link to our own web sites.  Aquila hosts teas 11:00 every Tuesday to share information about posting on Etsy.  The cost is relatively cheap, only .20 per posting, plus 3.5% of sales. Etsy bills monthly. Can sell supplies on Etsy also.

Guest Speaker- Brian McLernon
Brian is here to show us how to take better pictures of our own work.  Karen has used him in the past. A professional photograph is well worth the cost. Brian did a comprehensive talk and demonstration on photographing beads inside and at other locations. He focused on the importance of proper lighting and how to achieve the best resluts with just a few pieces of equipment. He showed us a simple light difusing box we can make ourselves using a cardboard box and vellum. Brian offered to help with picture taking advice and problem solving. Contact him at 503.768.9878  brian@brianmclernon.com

The meeting ended with members enjoying a treats, libations, bead exchange, and the enjoyable company of other ORBS attendees.
